Booking, Tickets And Crowds: Kyoto FAQ

This page answers what readers ask most: how temple tickets work, what free really means, and what changes on the day. Book through a link here and this site earns a commission, at no extra cost to you.

What Happens When You Book Here

You click a tour link, leave this site, and buy directly from the platform running that listing. The operator, the payment and the confirmation are all theirs; this site never handles your booking or your card. When a purchase goes through, the platform pays this site a commission from its own margin, and the price you pay is the same either way. Cancellation and refund questions go to the platform you bought from, not to this site.

How Kyoto Tickets And Temple Admissions Work

Many shrine grounds cost nothing to enter: Fushimi Inari Taisha publishes no fee at all. Temples usually charge at the gate, and the amounts vary: Kinkaku-ji is 500 yen, Kiyomizu-dera 500, and Ginkaku-ji rose to 1,000 yen for adults from 1 April 2026. Some sites split the difference, with a free outer ground and a paid hall or garden inside. Check the venue's official page before you go, since fees do change, and Tofuku-ji revises its own on 1 November 2026.

Weather, Seasons And Crowds On The Day

The honest planning variable is the season. The JMA normals put August as Kyoto's hottest month, a mean of 28.5 C, and July as its wettest, 223.6 mm, so the same Higashiyama temple walk is a different day in summer heat, in rain, or at autumn colour, when the buses serving the eastern hills fill first. In Gion, the private alleys off Hanamikoji carry district-council signage asking visitors not to photograph them; the main street is the place for pictures.

Can You Walk Kyoto With A Free Guide?

Yes, and honestly described only as pay what you want. GuruWalk lists exactly ten live English walks in Kyoto, each led by a named guru. You pay nothing up front and tip the guide at the end, in whatever amount you choose. This site earns nothing on those walks.
