Kyoto Map Of Attractions, Areas And Day Trips

Drawn rather than described, Kyoto resolves quickly. The old city sits on a valley floor as a grid, with hills closing in on three sides and the Kamo river cutting through the middle. Gion and the eastern temple district sit on one flank, Arashiyama lies west, Fushimi Inari Taisha sits south, and the quieter northern temples spread toward the hills. Grouping your days by geography beats grouping them by list order: two places on opposite sides of the map can cost you the better part of a day, while neighbours on the same slope chain together easily.

The City On One Map

Use the interactive map below to test a hotel against a bus route or subway line before booking it, and to check whether two places are genuinely walkable. Some distances here mislead in both directions. A short hop across the river can involve a bridge detour, while a stretch along the Philosopher's Path that looks long on screen passes temple after temple and never feels it. The grid helps too: addresses in central Kyoto follow street names that the map makes visible at a glance.

Every Place On This Site, Plotted To Scale

This map is drawn from the site's own coordinates rather than served from a tile provider, so each pin sits where the place actually is. The river, the hills, the parks and the street grid underneath are real geometry, which means the distances you read off it are real too, in metres and kilometres. The filter chips dim a group rather than hiding it, so a filtered view still keeps its sense of the whole city. Each numbered card opens that place's own page for admissions, access notes and what to pair it with.

Where the day starts, and the forty-seven mapped points around it A true-scale plot of 48 real coordinates read from OpenStreetMap, north upwards. Kyoto Station Area is the ringed point. Every other point is one mapped place, coloured by which set it belongs to and numbered to match the cards below. The grid squares are 5 km across. Twenty points sit within a few metres of a neighbour, so they have been nudged apart just far enough to stay readable. A dashed line runs back to the true position. Distances on the cards are straight-line figures between the mapped coordinates, not road distances and not walking times. • North is up. The bar on the map shows 2.5 km.
  • Drag or zoom the map to reach the outlying temples.

Street, river and park geometry comes from OpenStreetMap contributors, and the place positions are theirs too. Where two sights sit almost on top of each other, the label is nudged clear of its neighbour, but the pin itself never moves.

Filter Every Tour By Length, Rating And Kind

Every figure in the table below comes straight from the operator's own listing: the rating, the review count, the stated duration and the from-price. Nothing here is our estimate. The live listing remains the authority on availability, so check it before you plan around a specific departure.

What the listing includes

Labels come from each listing's own title, so they narrow the list rather than promise anything: an unlabelled tour may still cover what you want. Ratings and review counts are the listing's own, and prices sit on the live booking page, where they shift with date and group size.

Sort by length when time is tight: a one-hour or ninety-minute slot slots into a temple morning, while the eight and nine hour entries are full days that leave little room for anything else. Sorting by rating surfaces the crowd-tested picks, the entries with review counts in the thousands. From here the homepage groups the same roster by kind, and the area pages say what is worth building a half day around, from Higashiyama to Arashiyama.
